Ok, I just got my 16-80 and just completed my initial tests comparing with 18-135, 18-55, 16F2.8, 55-200 and 50F2. All tests done on a tripod, OIS off, cable release F4 (where possible), AF-S with 2nd smallest, Electronic first curtain, F4, 1S shutter and ISO160.
First off: I believe that the XF16-80 has an AF communication error with the XT3. Seems to work fine with my XE-3, but not consistent with the XT3. I shot indoors under artificial light..possibly a factor?, but XT3 did fine with other lenses and from my experience, outperforms the XE3 in these conditions.
I only looked at center sharpness for now. Moving on to comparative tests at 18/16mm I would rate them as follows (out of 10):
- I did 7 shots at 18mm first two were tack sharp, next 5 were very blurry.
- Tried again with another 10 shots. All were blurry. Not just soft, but blurry.
- I repeated that test with the XE3 all were fine.
- Went back to the XT3, focused with AF, switched to MF, scale read 1M; repeated Scale read 3M; Repeated scale read 1M; repeated scale read 5M
- Manual focused with XT3; All were sharp.
XF16-80: 8
XF18-135: 3
XF18-55: 5 (acceptable limit for me)
16F2.8: 8
XF10-24: 8
Basically, when it focuses ok, I'd put it on par with my 16F2.8 and 10-24 - and these are sharp. Noticeably better than the 18-55.
AT 50/55mm focal length, my ratings are:
16-80: 8
18-135: two shots at 6, two shots at 3
18-55: two shots at 7; two shots at 6
XF50F2: 10
XF55-200: 9
At 80mm my ratings are:
16-80: 7
18-135: 4
XF55-200: 9
Optically, in the centre, I think the lens is pretty damn good. A step up from the 18-55. Way better than the 18-135, not quite at the level of the 55-200 or primes..but not far off. My results seem to be consistent with MTF charts for the centre region..
Of course, these ratings are very subjective and apply to MY copies of lenses only. I will look at edges later. I'd post pics, but there over 100 of them. I did about 5 of each condition.
Sorry it's a bit rambling, but it is late and I wanted to post this before going to bed because I think these findings are pretty interesting. It would be good if someone else could corroborate.

Vamos .. .al estilo del Canon 24-105 L .. o del Nikkor 24-120 VR F4 ....
